“East+West=Peace” is the first art project in Ukraine aimed at popularizing the cultural heritage of humanity through the prism of the talented young generation, carrying out an educational mission to strengthen the Ukrainian national idea, and develop the national musical art. The head of the project, professor, Honored Science and Technology Figure of Ukraine, member of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO, Honorary Citizen of Chernivtsi, Tamara Marusyk, sets herself a goal of fulfilling these tasks.

This year’s music forum is dedicated to the dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the founding of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and the 80th anniversary of the founding of UNESCO

The project was born in 2018 and is being successfully implemented by the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (the former Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans – a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Its goal is the preservation and revival of cultural heritage, the development of both traditional and modern art, which has become especially relevant in the conditions of the full-scale invasion of the Russian aggressor into Ukraine. Every year, various events are held within its framework, aimed at increasing the spirituality of the young generation, the development of cultural pluralism and intercultural dialogue. These are concerts, music lectures, master classes, symposia, conferences, lectures-concerts, contests-festivals and others.

In April 2018, within the framework of the mentioned project, the IX International vocal and choral competition-festival “Let the Song Call Friends” was held in Chernivtsi for the first time, dedicated to the memory of Leonid Kadenyuk, the first cosmonaut of independent Ukraine.

Let us remind you that the contest-festival “Let the Song Call Friends” was started at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University and was held there for eight years in a row (2007-2014). The founder and director of the contest, Olha Churikova-Kushnir, is an Honored Art Worker of Ukraine, and a professor at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

The contest-festival received strong support from the university community, in particular teachers and students, authorities and local self-government bodies, and the interest of the cultural and artistic elite of Ukraine. The music forum is held under the patronage of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO.

Soloists and creative teams have the opportunity to perform at various concert venues, communicate with famous musicians, composers, conductors, improving their professional level, etc.

Concert halls of Chernivtsi host vocal and choral groups, ensembles, soloists-vocalists, soloists-instrumentalists from different parts of our country and other countries of the world.

Since 2023, within the framework of the “East+West=Peace” project, the Andriy Kushnirenko International Conducting Competition has been held, which was launched to honor the outstanding conductor, composer, and founder of the university’s music department (director of the competition – associate professor Zoіa Sofroniі). 140 young conductors from different parts of Ukraine and other countries of the world, including Poland, Romania, Moldova, and China, took part in the first Andriy Kushnirenko International Conducting Competition.

As part of the international cultural and artistic project “East+West=Peace”, the regional choral festival “Bukovyna Spring” is implemented annually, launched in 2016 by the conducting and choral singing section of the university’s music department with the aim of preserving, developing and popularizing vocal and choral art in Bukovyna (leader – associate professor Zoіa Sofroniі, co-organizer – professor Olha Churikova-Kushnir, creative group: assistants – Alla Zubchuk, Oleksandra Kirstiuk, accompanists – Olena Bondar, Olena Knignytska). The “Bukovynska Vesna” choral festival is designed to unite vocal and choral artists, representatives of various branches and areas of conducting and choral education and professional choral performance.
