“East+West=Peace” is the first art project in Ukraine aimed at popularizing the cultural heritage of humanity through the prism of the talent of the young generation, carrying out an educational mission to strengthen the ukrainian national idea, and develop the national musical art.

The project was created in 2018 and is successfully developing under the auspices of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (the former Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans – a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

“East+West=Peace” aims at humanistic tasks – preservation and revival of cultural heritage, and development of both traditional and modern art. The head of the project, vice-rector of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, professor, doctor of historical sciences, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, member of the National Commission of Ukraine on UNESCO affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, honorary citizen of the city of Chernivtsi, Tamara Volodymyrivna Marusyk, sets herself the task of fulfilling these tasks.

Every year, as part of the “East+West=Peace” project, various events are held aimed at increasing the spirituality of the young generation, the development of cultural pluralism, and intercultural dialogue. These are concerts, music lectures, master classes, symposiums, conferences, lecture-concerts, contest-festivals, and others.

In April 2018,as part of the project, the IX International vocal and choral Contest- Festival “Let a Song Gather Friends” was held, dedicated to the memory of Leonid Kadenyuk, the first astronaut of independent Ukraine.

Let us remind you that the Сontest-Festival “Let a Song Gather Friends” was started at the Luhansk National University named after Taras Shevchenko and was held there for eight years in a row (2007-2014). The founder and director of the competition, Olha Churikova-Kushnir, is an honored artist of Ukraine, and a professor at the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

Contest-Festival received strong support from the university community in particular teachers and students, authorities and local self-government of Bukovyna, and the interest of the cultural and artistic elite of Ukraine. Since 2019, the music forum has been held under the patronage of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO.

Soloists and creative groups have the opportunity to perform at various concert venues and communicate with famous musicians, composers, and conductors, increasing their professional level

Concert halls of Chernivtsi accept vocal and choral groups, ensembles, soloists-vocalists, soloists-instrumentalists from different parts of our country and other countries of the world.

 From 2023, as part of the “East+West=Peace” project, the Andriy Kushnirenko International Conducting Competition, based in honor of the outstanding conductor, composer, and founder of the Department of Music of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. (director of the competition, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Zoya Sofroniy). The first Andriy Kushnirenko International Competition was held on December 13–15, 2023, and brought together representatives of Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Moldova, and China. 140 young conductors from different parts of Ukraine, near and far abroad took part in it. The launched Andrii Kushnirenko International Conducting Competition has a significant resonance among talented young people from art education institutions of various levels of training.

As part of the international cultural and artistic project “East+West=Peace”, the regional art choral festival “Bukovynska Spring” is implemented annually, launched in 2016 by the conducting and choral singing section of the Department of Music of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University to preserve, develop and popularization of vocal and choral art in Bukovyna (leader – associate professor Zoya Sofroniy, co-organizer – professor Olga Churikova-Kushnir, creative group: assistants – Alla Zubchuk, Oleksandra Kyrstyuk, accompanists – Alyona Bondar, Olena Knignytska). The “Bukovynska Vesna” choral festival is designed to unite vocal and choral artists, representatives of various branches and areas of conducting and choral education and professional choral performance.
